Why GBP Is Your Most Important Free Marketing Asset

Before a customer calls you, they look you up on Google. What they see in that first 10 seconds determines whether they continue. Your Google Business Profile controls most of it β€” name, address, phone, photos, reviews, hours.

Getting this right doesn't require ad spend. It requires attention.

Claim and Verify First

Go to business.google.com. Search for your business β€” Google sometimes creates profiles automatically. Claim it or create it. Verification options: postcard (5–14 days), phone/SMS (instant for some), email, or video recording.

Complete Every Section

Businesses that complete 100% of their profile rank significantly higher than those at 40–60%. Don't skip anything.

Category: Your primary category is the most important ranking factor after distance. Choose the most specific accurate option. Add secondary categories for additional services.

Description: 750 characters. What you do, who you serve, what makes you different. Natural language β€” not a keyword list.

Hours: Keep accurate and updated. Showing open when you're closed destroys trust faster than anything.

Attributes: Google has hundreds β€” 'Free Wi-Fi,' 'Wheelchair accessible,' etc. Complete every relevant one. They appear in search results and influence decisions.

Photos β€” Where Most Businesses Lose

Businesses with 100+ photos get significantly more clicks and calls than those with under 10.

Upload: exterior (helps people find you), interior (sets expectations), team photos (humanizes), product/service shots, 'at work' photos. Quality matters β€” blurry dark photos are worse than none. Use natural light.

Reviews Are Your Primary Ranking Signal

Number of reviews, average rating, and review recency are the three most powerful factors under your control.

Getting reviews: Ask right after positive interactions. Generate a short review link from your profile (Share β†’ Get more reviews). Send via WhatsApp β€” one tap to the review form.

Responding: Reply to every review within 24 hours. Thank positive reviewers by name. For negative reviews: acknowledge, apologize, offer to resolve offline, leave contact info. Never argue publicly.

Don't incentivize reviews β€” violates Google's terms and can get your listing penalized.

Posts β€” Underused Feature

Post at least twice a week. New products, offers, events, updates. Posts expire after 7 days but they signal that your business is active. They don't dramatically affect ranking but they convert better β€” a current post tells customers you're engaged.

Q&A Section

Anyone can ask or answer questions publicly. Take control: ask yourself the questions customers commonly ask, answer them thoroughly from your business account, monitor for new questions.

Check Insights Monthly

Google shows how customers find you, what they do, and what searches trigger your profile. If you're getting many direction requests but few calls, your description needs work. If you appear for unexpected searches, decide whether to lean in or redirect.

Critical Mistakes to Fix

Wrong or outdated hours. Old low-quality photos. No responses to negative reviews. Inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across directories β€” must be identical everywhere. Wrong primary category.

An optimized GBP costs nothing but time and is the highest-ROI local marketing activity for most businesses.
