Why WhatsApp API Pricing Confuses Everyone
Meta changed pricing in 2023 and again in 2024. The current model is conversation-based, not message-based. Most guides online are outdated.
The Conversation Model
Meta charges per conversation β a 24-hour window during which you can exchange unlimited messages with one customer.
Business-initiated: You send first (using a template). Costs more. User-initiated: Customer messages you first. Cheaper. You have 24 hours to reply freely.
Current India Pricing (2026)
- Marketing (promotional templates): ~βΉ1.00 per conversation
- Utility (order updates, confirmations): ~βΉ0.35 per conversation
- Authentication (OTPs): ~βΉ0.35 per conversation
- Service (customer replies to you): ~βΉ0.35 per conversation
Free tier: First 1,000 service conversations per month are free.

Small business, 500 customers/month:
- 500 order confirmations (utility): βΉ175
- 100 promotional blasts: βΉ100

Mid-size, 5,000 conversations:
- 3,000 utility: βΉ1,050
- 1,000 marketing: βΉ1,000

The BSP Markup
You don't access the API directly β you go through a Business Solution Provider (BSP). BSPs add their own markup:
- Per-conversation markup: βΉ0.10β0.50 extra
- Monthly platform fee: βΉ2,000β15,000/month
When evaluating BSPs, ask: 'Do you show Meta's invoice separately?' If not, you can't verify what you're paying Meta vs. what you're paying them.
Template Approval
Before sending business-initiated messages, Meta must approve your templates. Takes 24β72 hours. Templates must follow content policies β marketing templates face stricter review.
Avoiding Cost Traps
Don't blast cold contacts. Users who block or report your number hurt your quality rating. Low rating = number restriction or ban.
Opt-in is required. Explicit customer opt-in before messaging. Meta enforces this seriously.
Watch conversation windows. If a customer messages you and you reply after 24 hours, a new conversation starts β another charge.
Template spam is expensive. Blasting 10,000 people costs βΉ10,000 in Meta fees alone. Target your campaigns.
Is It Worth It?
For most Indian businesses, yes β WhatsApp open rates (95%+) justify the cost when your average transaction value is βΉ500+. Calculate your unit economics first. High-volume, low-value transactions can see margin erosion quickly.
